Uber-producer and former Mrs. James Cameron Gale Anne Hurd (Aliens, The Walking Dead) has a new television project, and this time rather than focus on a world besieged by undead cannibals Hurd is looking to explore the mysteries of the unknown that exist within our own borders, and I’m not just talking about the popularity of Snuggies.
The producer is developing a television series based on the recently published non-fiction book Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base by Annie Jacobsen.
As part of her research into the book Jacobsen interview 19 men who served at the famed top secret military installation and an additional 55 who had links to Area 51. Although the book doesn’t confirm the existence of extraterrestrials within its pages, it does cover other sensitive projects the government worked on at the base, including nuclear weapons testing, building super-secret, supersonic jets, and fighting terrorists abroad.
According to Deadline, the plot synopsis of the Area 51 series, as being written by feature screenwriter Karl Gajdusek, “will follow two men working on the base who are thrust into danger when they uncover secrets that the government will protect at any cost.” Gajdusek, whose credits including the upcoming Tom Cruise sci-fi adventure Oblivion, will executive produce the show with Hurd and serve as showrunner. The project will go out to the networks soon.
