New ‘Battleship’ Trailer & Images Released; Director Peter Berg Discusses Sequels

BAADASSSSS!   |

Battleship

Today Universal Pictures released a new trailer for their alien invasion epic/board game adaptation Battleship, along with some images from the film. You can check them out here below.

The film focuses on five international naval fleets forced to do battle with hostile forces from outer space. Thrown into the mix are Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker, Asano Tadanobu, and Alexander Skarsgård. Battleship is directed by Peter Berg from a screenplay by Jon and Erich Hoeber.

Building on the teaser trailer released over the summer, the new trailer gives us clearer glimpses of the invading aliens and their technology as well as expanding on the scale of destruction.

Director Berg, who has also helmed memorable action flicks The Rundown and The Kingdom, recently expressed his thoughts to Movieline [via Indiewire] on the potential for Battleship sequels:

“I never go done in one. I’m always thinking, let’s keep going. I love these characters; I love these two dudes [played by Kitsch and Skarsgard]. I love the world they come from, and I loved the idea of the goldilocks [alien] planets and the fact that if there is credible life out there, it’s probably going to be from a planet that shares a similar relationship to its sun that we do to ours, and it’s very possible that it is a form of life that’s relatable to us, that has a neurological system, that has a respiratory system, that has emotion, that has thoughts, that has reasoning capabilities. That’s the tenor of the thread of Battleship. I’m certainly hoping that it’s something that we can explore for a long time.”

The movie is already being compared to past sci-fi action films like Independence Day and Battle: Los Angeles, but the idea of a naval fleet encountering otherworldly forces beyond its comprehension for me brings to mind the 1980 film The Final Countdown, starring Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen. It also features Troma Entertainment honcho Lloyd Kaufman in a cameo. I highly recommend it.

Battleship opens on May 18, 2012.

  1. Can’t say I ever pictured aliens being the source of the “hits” when I played the game as a kid.

Actually, I’d stack my boats on top of each other, so while the top boat would inevitably be hit, the others would be safe.  :)

    Smiles!
