Warner Brothers is currently developing a live-action version of the beloved fable Pinocchio, which tells the story of a wooden puppet whose nose grows when he tells a lie and who wishes nothing more than to be a real live boy. The script has already been completed by Bryan Fuller, who has previously written and produced episodes of Star Trek: Voyager, Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies, and Heroes, but has no feature film experience as of yet.
Now the project is getting some serious attention from top-tier talents. It’s being reported that Tim Burton is very interested in directing the movie, and that none other than Robert Downey Jr. is his top choice to play Geppetto.
It sounds like Burton is talking to Warner Brothers to see if they can come to an accord on a directing deal, and apparently Downey Jr. does have interest in the role and in working with Burton. But a lot still needs to fall into place before such things can be discussed more seriously, such as the other project that Burton is thinking about doing for Fox, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, and the immensely busy schedule of Downey Jr. that would need to be altered, shifted, or cleared.
As you’ll recall, Downey Jr. was first in line to play the Wizard in Sam Raimi’s Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz, The Great and Powerful, but that fell through. Let’s hope things work out a little better here because, once again, the actor does seem like a great fit for the character.
What do you think about the idea of Tim Burton’s version of Pinocchio woth Robert Downey Jr. as Geppetto?
