It’s getting to the point where we’re seeing exorcism and demonic possession movies as often as zombie or vampire movies.
Nevertheless, for those who didn’t know, a sequel to the 2010 horror flick The Last Exorcism is in the works. Back in August we found out that a writer had been hired to pen the script, and now things are really beginning to move forward.
It’s being reported that star Ashley Bell will be returning for the sequel, and that a director has been chosen in Ed Gass-Donnelly (This Beautiful City, Small Town Murder Songs).
What’s even more interesting is that apparently the movie will be made with an R rating. Most movies these days are too fearful of the badge of honor R rating, and cut away to a watered down PG-13, often times leading to loss of realism and an overall loss of quality (in all likelihood The Expendables 2, for example). The Last Exorcism, on the other hand, was rated PG-13 the first time around, so to step things up for its sequel is a bold and admirable move on their part.
Producer Eli Roth explained the move, saying:
The first film worked great as a PG-13 psychological film, but now we want to go R-rated and show the true horror of what this subject matter offers.
Are you excited for an R-rated Last Exorcism sequel, or has the exorcism/demonic possession sub-genre run its course?
