Here’s what Dynamite says about Green Hornet #22: “In the first issue of an all-new arc that will change Green Hornet forever changed, new villains arrive on the Century City scene, and an old hero dies. Britt Reid tries to manage a newspaper, fight the gangs of Century City, and figure out his relationship with the new Kato. Meanwhile, a new politician attempts to rise to the top of Century City’s power structure on a simple platform: stopping the Green Hornet’s “Reign of Terror”. Fear, loathing, lust and all-out kung fu action in Outcast, Part One of Six!”

I was a very vocal and outspoken fan of writer Ande Parks recent “one & done” story on this title. Now, here we have the first issue in what will be a six-issue story line that will take up half a year on the title. After reading the issue, honestly, I didn’t realize how much I missed the grand, epic stories that are told in comics. I think if Parks follows the format that he’s got here, and I don’t know if he’s doing it on purpose or not, with a bunch of single issue stories and THEN a longer story arc, it’s going to work great. Parks put so much character into each…..um…..character that in this issue you get a lot more time than you would in a single issue story. Everyone has something to do and an important role to play. There’s so much going on, yet it’s never over loaded, the pacing is very well done here.

Overall, you get a very “epic” feel from this issue, yes, it’s a first chapter so a lot of elements are introduced, but there’s also a plot that’s resolved. And congratulations to Parks on ending the issue on a perfect note. It’s not a cheap cliffhanger, but enough of one to make you actually THINK about the book for the next month. All around, another great issue by this writer.

If I had a lest favorite part about this issue, it’s Igor Vitorino‘s artwork. To me, it looks a little… I think rushed is the word I’m looking for. For my money, I could use some more detail in the faces. Some of them just look a little off to me. His background detail is amazing, his anatomy is great, page layouts are good, I just think the faces of mostly everyone look a little rushed. But honestly, that’s really the only complaint that I had with the art on the book.

Man, I love this comic series. It’s pretty much got everything you read comics for. Action, mystery, heroics, drama, and oh yeah, FUN! The dynamic between the characters in this book is great. It’s written like actual people TALK and INTERACT. Not in one word exchanges or long drawn-out monologues. It’s a fantastic comic and if you pick it up, you’re going to enjoy it. A lot.
