Writer Seth Grahame-Smith Shares ‘Beetlejuice 2’ Details; Confirms Michael Keaton’s Involvement

Beetlejuice

Back in January, Tim Burton briefly spoke about the long-rumored sequel to his popular 1988 flick, Beetlejuice.

At the time, Burton only said how much he loved the original and how good star Michael Keaton was in it, and that he told Seth Grahame-Smith—author of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (as well as the screenplay for the Burton-produced adaptation), and writer of Burton’s latest directorial effort, Dark Shadows—to come up with some ideas for Beetlejuice 2 and he would look at the possibility of actually doing the movie from there.

Grahame-Smith has a whole hell of a lot going on right now and won’t have the chance to work on the script until later this year, but he did talk about the project recently and shared some minor-yet-promising details about where he may be aiming.

First and foremost, the writer has met with both Burton and Keaton, and both still appear to be excited about the idea. Keaton would return to star while it looks like Burton will only be producing. It all solely rests on whether Grahame-Smith comes up with an idea for a sequel that’s worth doing.

As far as real details about what he’s come up with so far, that’s not yet known. But what is known is that Grahame-Smith is dedicated to doing this right or not doing it at all, which should be reassuring to most. The movie, if it does get made, won’t be a reboot or a remake, but a real-deal straight forward sequel.

Here’s where Grahame-Smith currently stands on the whole thing:

“I have a rough idea of what it’s gonna be. However””I should stress this””it’s not a remake, it’s not a reboot, it is a true sequel with Michael Keaton as the title character Beetlejuice. The thing that Tim and Michael and I all agree on, and is most important for me is, I don’t wanna be the guy that destroys the legacy and the memory of the first film; I would rather die. I would rather just not make it, I’d rather just throw the whole thing away than make something that pays no respect and doesn’t live up even close to the legacy of the first film.

This will be a true 26 or 27 years later sequel. What’s great is that for Beetlejuice, time means nothing in the afterlife, but the world outside is a different story.”

Again, no real juicy details here. But still, as someone who is curious about how they would approach making this sequel, I really like Grahame-Smith’s early-stage motivations.

Now we just wait and see what he comes up with.

Does the confirmation of Michael Keaton’s involvement and Grahame-Smith’s determination to do this right or not at all make you more optimistic about a Beetlejuice sequel?

  1. Didn’t he just finish Beetlejuice 2 with Johnny Depp and Tim Burton? This man should have stopped before he ruined Dark Shadows and saved the campy and reused jokes for Beetlejuice 2. So, now Burton and this writer will actually be making a Beetlejuice 3 with Keeton, instead of Depp next. Truly pathetic.
