AMC announced today that Robert Kirkman will be bringing the new Image comic book Thief of Thieves to the the cable network.
The Thief of Thieves comic book is a collaborative effort between several creators including Robert Kirkman, Nick Spencer, and Shawn Martinbrough that tells the story of a master thief who delves back into the underworld that he tried to leave, and vows only to take what has already been taken. As a comic, it feels very much akin to the many comics from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips considering its crime/noir vibe.
The television show will be handled by many of AMC’s The Walking Dead team with Kirkman, producer David Alpert and Chic Eegle, who was a part of The Walking Dead crew in its first season. This could prove great for many different comics, as it seems that AMC is optioning Thief of Thieves when only three issues have been released, but it’s before a variety of other comics including Morning Glories or Fatale, so it seems they may only be interested in Kirkman’s work in the wake of the success of The Walking Dead. Kirkman states:
AMC recognizes the limitless ideas generated by the comic industry. Their dedication to bringing The Walking Dead to life as a TV show has been key to its success and I’m excited about the potential of Thief of Thieves to reach similar levels of success.
So what are we going to see next? Super Dinosaur? Invincible? The future remains to be seen, but if Kirkman’s comments ring true, then we could be seeing a lot more down the line.
There’s no set date for the arrival of Thief of Thieves on television, but you can find the third issue in comic book stores and online this today. (You can order all the print issues here).
