Morrison Sale

Oh my! Oh my! Comixology is having a Grant Morrison sale! For a mere 99 cents a piece, you can pick up several of Grant Morrison’s finest DC/Vertigo comics, including Doom Patrol, Batman, All-Star Superman, and more.

What’s the catch? Well, let’s get into that. Barely any of the comics on sale will provide you with a full story. While you may be teased by the mention of Batman R.I.P., Batman and Robin, and Batman Incorporated, the first thing you need to realize is that this isn’t the entire run. If you’re not reading Batman and Son or Club of Heroes, then the rest of this run won’t make any sense. But beyond that, the entire run of Batman and Robin that leads directly into Batman Incorporated is not in this sale. If you want to do that, you’re going to want to buy the regularly priced Batman and Robin #10-16. So, if you’re wanting to check this out, I really suggest you go back to Batman #655 and start from there and keep going. You won’t regret it, it’s one of the finest runs on Batman, for sure.

Now, maybe you want to check out the much heralded All-Star Superman. Well, I wouldn’t blame you. To me, it’s the definitive take on the Man of Steel, and you’re doing yourself a disservice by not reading it. But, if you are planning to read it, you need to read the entire series, and you’re going to want to if you read until issue six, but the rest of the series is not on sale. So, if you’re just buying from this sale, you’re going to miss out on one of the best comics of all time with All-Star Superman #10.

JLA is the same while. While you’ve got a decent start with this sale, it’s not the entire run and since the Morrison stories got better as the run went on, you may not want to buy from this section either. In fact, if you’re not willing to put yourself in the time when this was originally released, you may not even like the stories that are on sale here. I’m not, but I know a lot of others that can’t handle Superman’s mullet.

Now, the Flash issues are fine enough, but if you want pure Morrison, that won’t be here because the issues are co-credited to Mark Millar. There’s rumors going around that Morrison ghost wrote for Miller here, but who’s to say if that’s true or not. So really, if you’re looking for a good sale on Grant Morrison’s take on DC’s mainstay superheroes, you’re going to want to look somewhere else, because this is not it.

No, but the great thing about this sale is with Grant Morrison’s Vertigo work and his work with less popular DC super heroes like Animal Man and Doom Patrol. I’m going to go out on a limb here and lump the previously mentioned heroes with The Invisibles and tell you that this is a great sale to get a start on these titles. While none of the entire runs of these comics are available, it does have the first nine issues of Animal Man, and the first 16 issues of both The Invisibles and Doom Patrol. All of these are incredible comics that you’re absolutely going to want to read. Each of these comics are strange, wonderful and creative takes on the superhero brand and absolutely must be read. It’s been said many times that these three books are the definition of Morrison’s comic book work, and I wouldn’t disagree. These are must buys that get you deeply involved in many incredibly immersive stories.

But if you’re wanting full stories, you’re going to want to look towards We3, Vinirama, Joe The Barbarian and the two Seaguy mini-series. I’m not going into too much detail here but I haven’t read Vinirama, so I can’t speak to its quality, but it is the entire mini-series, so there’s that. Seaguy, on the other hand, is a must buy. It’s currently out of print, so getting both minis for six bucks is a great decision to make. And then there’s We3. We3 is one of the most powerful, beautiful and sad comics that I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading, so if you haven’t read it, it’s the best three dollars you could ever spend today. Especially for animal lovers. Joe The Barbarian, though, is not Morrison’s best work, but it’s an interesting take on childhood, loss and disease. Also, Sean Murphy’s art is killer.

So, while not all of Morrison’s best work is here (where’s New X-Men?), it’s a great way to start some of the great Morrison work that you’ve heard about, but never had the chance to read. So make sure to go to Comixology and buy up as many of these comics as you can before Friday at 11 PM Eastern, because that’s the all-over. But if you heed my words, you’ll make the most out of this sale.
