The X-Men film franchise has explored the past and the present, but never the future. Time travel is a very familiar theme that is explored in the X-Men comics, but it was one that was never explored in the X-Men films, until now. When we reported that the sequel to the Untitled X-Men: First Class sequel would be released in 2014, we didn’t know anything about the project, except that Matthew Vaughn is expected to begin shooting the sequel in January, but now we might know what the film could contain.
AICN has word that 20th Century Fox has register the title Days of Future Past with the MPAA. Fans of both the comic book and the 90s animated series will be familiar with this title as it was one of the best storylines in the Marvel Universe. Although I am most familiar with the animated incarnation – Bishop goes back in time to prevent Senator Kelly from being assassinated – the comic version is slightly different.
In it, a present day X-Men team is forewarned by a future Kitty Pryde of the impending dangers that will occur if they do not stop the assassination of Senator Kelly.
But as confusing as the X-Men cinematic timeline is, they could actually use Days of Future Past to their advantage. Time travel could actually save Senator Kelly from being killed off by Magneto’s genetic altering device that was used in Bryan Singer’s first X-Men film. But the studio hasn’t confirmed anything, and who knows if they will even use the story at all.
