Jack Finney‘s Time and Again has been under development for some time and now it appears that it is coming out of its gestation phase. According to reports, Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) has been tapped to direct the adaptation based on Finney’s story.

Liman will also produce, with Dave Bartis co-producing and Erik Feig, Mike Paseornek, Gillian Bohrer, and Jeyun Choi overseeing the project for Lionsgate.

Finney was also the author of other science fiction novels like The Body Snatchers, which was also turned into a film. Time and Again went on to sell more than 200,000 copies since its release in the 1970s.

The novel follows a New York-based illustrator who becomes a part of a government experiment, which involves traveling back in time to 1882 New York. However he finds himself falling in love and has to make a decision: stay and live out his life in the past or return to the future.

The project was originally set up at Universal Pictures in the mid-1990s, with Robert Redford attached to direct. Other filmmakers have tried to adapt the project as well, but none have been able to bring an adaptation as close to where it is now.

Liman is currently preparing for the Tom Cruise-vehicle actioner All You Need Is Kill.
