Yesterday Joss Whedonshared some of his thoughts on the script for the upcoming James Gunn-directed Guardians of the Galaxy, just one of the many important pieces to Marvel Studios’ Phase Two. Now The Avengers director is opening up about Marvel Studios’ plans for Phase Two in general and giving us one more clue about what we could possibly see in The Avengers 2.
In addition to being the director of The Avengers 2, Whedon is also a creative contributor for any Marvel Studios-related projects until the year 2015. Basically Whedon is the captain that steers the ship in the right direction. And much like The Avengers, the events in Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, and possibly Ant-Man will dictate what could possibly happen in The Avengers 2. But Whedon doesn’t want to get in the way and wants the directors of their respective films to make their work their own.
“Very talented people are writing and directing these movies, and what I don’t want to be is the guy they dread, who’s going to come in and say” – here, Whedon affects a pompous British accent – “‘Oh, well I have the power to say change this.’ I’m not that.”
As for The Avengers 2, it’s way to early to tell what we could be seeing in that film. Could we see a certain dark elf, a nefarious corporation, a gauntlet with six powerful gems, or maybe a cold brainwashed soldier? It’s really hard to tell without having any solid info. But Whedon does offer a look at the kind of tone we could see in The Avengers 2.
“The creation of the team is not the happy ending,” he said. “It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I’m digging, just twist that knife. And that’s exciting for me.”
It certainly does sound exciting. We’ll be sure to keep you posted on any Avengers-related news as it comes along.
