When someone talks or uses a cellphone during a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse, they are booted from the theater. They believe that those actions disturb other moviegoers and ruin the theater experience. Most theater chains won’t implement this kind of rule and choose to play out some generic and non-threatening clip asking patrons not to use their cellphones.
But a London theater called The Prince Charles Cinema is taking this rule to the next hilarious (and potentially dangerous) level. They have volunteer ninjas dressed in all black bodysuits watching over the theaters looking out for any kinds of disturbance. When they do find one, they give disturbance to the one ruining the movie experience.
/Film has found someone who has experienced this for themselves, and it looks like The Prince Charles Cinema ninjas are effective.
“I normally hate noisy people in cinemas, but I got a call from my friend just as the movie started and thought I could get away with taking it. The last thing I expected was two completely blacked-out people suddenly appearing by our seats and give me and my mates a warning to shut up. It was actually pretty terrifying at first, but then I realised it was a bit of a laugh and a great way to make it clear what I was doing was having an impact on those around me. It certainly made me hang up and shut up for the rest of the film.”
It’s great the people can get a kick out of this, especially the person in question. But after the events in Aurora, Colorado, I really don’t see anyone hiring any theater ninjas in American theater chains anytime soon. Volunteers could easily join up and even though they will be questioned and cleared, who’s to say that their intentions aren’t true when the room goes dark.
There is potential there, and I love the idea that someone else is doing the work instead of me having to get up and miss the movie. But in a generation where pranks are pulled everywhere and anywhere, I believe that it will be a while before we see anyone in America hire theater ninjas.
