Whether or not Terry Gilliam is interested once again in adapting Miguel de Cervantes‘ Don Quixote for the big screen is unknown. But you can’t blame the man for passing on the project all together. His first attempt at adapting the novel, which would have starred Johnny Depp, was hampered by inclement weather, illness, and other obstacles. So Gilliam decided to give it a second try, this time this time starring Robert Duvall; however, financial problems prevented the project from getting off the ground.

So far there hasn’t been any word of Gilliam going for try number three. The director is currently busy working on his new film, The Zero Theorem. But the story of Don Quixote will not die; in fact, Disney will revive Cervantes’ tale and Johnny Depp could star in it.

Deadline reports that Steve Pink and Jeff Morris have been hired to write a script for the film. According to them, it will be a reimagining of Don Quixote, and it would very well have Depp star as the lead. It’s not surprising that Depp is teaming up with Disney once again. After all their partnership is mutually beneficial, at least when you watch the Pirates of the Caribbean films; we’ll have to wait and see if The Lone Ranger is just as successful.

It should be interesting to see who ends up directing the film. Since it is in its early development stages, there could be a chance that Gilliam could direct. Let’s just hope that illness and dangerous weather patterns stay out of Gilliam’s way if he does end up signing on.
