New Line has chosen their director for the movie adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra‘s brilliant graphic novel series, Y: The Last Man.

It’s being reported that Dan Trachtenberg, the co-host of the popular Totally Rad Show who showed off his filmmaker skills with that excellent Portal live-action short, will be directing Y: The Last Man. He steps in for D.J. Caruso who was attached to direct the movie for a long time, with Shia LaBeouf attached to star, before departing the project.

The Y: The Last Man project was removed from the back burner and made a priority in 2012, with the writers of Jericho, Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia, grabbed to handle script writing duties.

Trachtenberg was also reported in October of 2011 to be directing a movie titled Crime of the Century. It’s unclear where that project currently stands in relation to this one. He also directed another short called More Than You Can Chew, which can be seen here.

All of the pieces are coming into place, which should be exciting for fans of the comics, but there are still big question marks looming. The biggest of them all is of course whether Mr. Trachtenberg will be able to make the movie faithful to the very mature, very R-rated source material, or if New Line will restrict him in the name of making money. Next is whether this will be one movie, two, or a trilogy. Most will tell you that Y: The Last Man should be a TV series on HBO, not a movie…or, in the very least, a trilogy of movies. Then, of course, we can’t help but wonder what Brian K. Vaughan’s role will be in helping out, whether it be as a co-writer or consultant or shepherd, if he’ll have any role at all (which would be very very bad news indeed).

It will be interesting to see what the overall plan is for the adaptation as things move forward from here.
