Among the many beloved movies and movie franchises we’ve heard listed off as potential candidates for the remake or reboot treatment, the 1984 horror-comedy classic Gremlins is one of them. Back in 2009 there was even word that a possible Gremlins 3might be happening. Thankfully, as of this very moment, it’s also one of the lucky few that has yet to go under the knife.
But it’s hard to say how long that will last. According to sources, Warner Brothers is in some form of negotiations with Gremlins producer Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment to try and remake the movie.
But do not get too enraged about the news just yet, if it’s something you don’t want to see happen, of course. This isn’t the first time that negotiations have taken place; talks to remake Gremlins have happened numerous times over the years, with no deals struck.
Unfortunately it also means that Warner Brothers and who knows who else think there’s a good remake to be made here, and are hellbent on doing so. Feels like it’s only a matter of time, passed through some tough negotiating sessions, before we hear something more official.
I would love to see another Gremlins film! Not a rehash of a previous one. No reboot, no remake, no retelling, no re-anything. Whats wrong with using the same lovable and scary Gremlins in a NEW story?! Do it.
A Gremlins remake is bad, bad, bad, bad, BAD idea; you just know they’ll render all the Gremlins and Mogwai in CGI instead of the wonderful puppetry by Chris Walas which still holds up today. Better to just do Gremlins 3 then soil the memory of a genre classic. If Spielberg produces a shitty remake, I will never respect him again.
