As a creative consultant for the Marvel properties over at Fox, Mark Millar gives a very important input for the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties. One of the studio’s most highly anticipated titles – other than The Wolverine, that is – is X-Men: Days of Future Past, the sequel to X-Men: First Class.

The sequel is based on a story arc where a future Kitty Pryde is sent back to the present time to warn the X-Men about the terrible future that awaits them if they fail to save Senator Robert Kelly’s life from an assassination.

Director Bryan Singer has confirmed that a majority of the cast from the First Class and the original trilogy would reprise their roles and that the film would take place 11 years after First Class. Perhaps the most important return is that of Ellen Page, who played Kitty Pryde in X-Men: The Last Stand. It was her character that warns the X-Men that mutant-hunting robots called Sentinels are programmed to eliminate the mutant threat.

The Sentinels were teased in The Last Stand when Wolverine managed to destroy one by cutting off its head. But that was as close as audiences were going to get with a Sentinel – a severed head. In an interview with SFX magazine, Millar says that the deadly robots will be a “big feature” in Days of Future Past.

“I don’t really want to give too much away but the Sentinels are a big feature of this story. They will be cool and this will deliver on all of the teasers. We’ve all been waiting for this ever since X-Men: The Last Stand showed us one of their heads. Now it is finally coming, and we only have to pay ten quid to see it in the cinema whereas they’re having to pay $100 million to deliver it. So I’m delighted [laughs].”

When asked about character screen time, Millar said:

I think the best comparison I can give is to Star Trek – that is an ensemble but it never feels as if there is not enough time with any one character. Or maybe Lost – that is an ensemble but every character gets their own moment to shine.

Some felt that Kitty Pryde did not get the justice she deserved in The Last Stand, so Millar made this promise to fans of the character:

Kitty Pryde fans will not be disappointed.
