Gail Simone To Take Over ‘Red Sonja’ For Dynamite This July

Red Sonja by Fiona Staples

How awesome is this? One of the premiere writers in comics, Gail Simone, who’s best known for her work on DC series such as Batgirl, Birds Of Prey, Secret Six, and Wonder Woman, will be writing an upcoming relaunched Red Sonja for Dynamite Entertainment beginning this July, the publisher announced on Friday.

This is huge for a variety of reasons. Primarily, Red Sonja is one of those comics that unjustifiably winds up thrown in the pile of other comics with scantly clad super heroines – ones who aren’t necessarily presented in a positive light for female readers, with art and writing that rarely has a strong female voice or vision behind them. With Simone being one of the most outspoken and progressive voices in comics, however, a truly awesome, kick-ass, brutal lead lady will surely be within the pages of Red Sonja, especially without the restrictions of a major corporation-backed publisher.

Another reason this is huge is simply because Dynamite scored one of the most talked about and highly praised writers in the industry to write for them. If Dynamite doesn’t see huge numbers off of this announcement, I’ll honestly be shocked. Like I said prior, Gail Simone has a strong voice that could, and most likely will, do amazing things for The She-Devil with a Sword. I don’t think I’ve ever been able to call myself a Red Sonja fan, and I honestly haven’t read much of the character, but I certainly will be reading when a new #1 issue debuts in July. If you doubt that Gail Simone’s presence on the title will be huge, read on to see her vision for the character…

It’s like this…even most of the best female heroines when I was a kid were pretty polite. What I love about Sonja is that she isn’t polite, she says what she means and if you give her any lip about it, hello, sword in the gut. She’s smart, she has a heart, she has some compassion. But when it’s go time, she’s a hellraiser, a mad general, she’s a sword edge virtuosa, she’s death on wheels. She is the woman you never want to mess with. I can relate, Sonja. No offense to all her guy writers, but THIS Red Sonja is about sex and swords! It’s everything you love about Red Sonja, except with more monsters getting stabbed in the eye.

This is going to be awesome. Looks like Dynamite is pretty excited about it too (and they should be).

“Words can’t even express how excited I am to have Gail Simone, one of the premiere writers in all of comics, write RED SONJA, a character she was born to work on. Fans will see in the first issue that she really cuts in to the heart of the character :-),” says Dynamite Entertainment CEO/Publisher Nick Barrucci. “I have wanted to work with Gail for years, and it’s incredibly exciting that her first choice in working with us is Sonja. A strong-willed female with fiery red hair writing about a strong-willed female with fiery red hair – AND A SWORD! It is a dream come true that this project has finally come to fruition! Gail and Sonja’s will be the blades that cut the deepest to her enemies chagrin!”

Interior art duties will be handled by Walter Geovani, who has worked on the series previously with the extremely talented Eric Trauttman, but the cover artwork will be handled by a handful of some of the finest female artists working in comics today, including Nicola Scott (whose Red Sonja prints are being given away for free at this weekend’s Emerald City Comic Con), Colleen Doran, Jenny Frison, Stephanie Buscema, and Fiona Staples.

The series is set for a July relaunch with a new #1, and I don’t think you’ll want to miss this, so make sure to tell your LCS to order you a copy as soon as possible.
