Marvel Studios has no problem reeling in some of the biggest names in Hollywood to star in their films. Tommy Lee Jones played the salty hard-nosed Colonel Chester Philips in Captain America: The First Avenger, a rare departure from the usual roles he’s known for. Now, it looks like Robert Redford will do the same. The actor who is well-known for running the business at the Sundance Film Festival and a few low key dramas, will now have a role in one of the most highly anticipated superhero films.
Deadline reports that the actor will play a senior level member of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Like most actors who sign on for roles in Marvel Studios films, they are generally contractually obligated to appear in a few more. It’s widely known that Samuel L. Jackson is signed on for multiple films, but the number of films that Redford would appear in if he does sign on has yet to be revealed.
Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie, Toby Jones, Hayley Atwell, Emily VanCamp, and Scarlett Johansson are all set to star in the Anthony and Joe Russo-directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, coming to theaters on April 4, 2014.
