The Martians Invade Classic Lit (Or Not) In ‘Mars Attacks: Classics Obliterated’

Mars Attacks: Classics Obliterated

Last year saw the 50th anniversary of Mars Attacks, and during its celebrations the Martians have invaded the pages of several IDW comic book series, like KISS, Transformers, the Real Ghostbusters, and more. Now, this Summer, the aliens are set to invade classic literature!!!!

In what quite possibly could be yet another early April Fool’s Day joke from IDW (much like last year’s Mars Attacks Broadway), the publisher announced today (two full days ahead of April 1st) that next Mars will attack the literary worlds of Moby Dick, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, and Robinson Crusoe in Mars Attacks: Classics Obliterated.

The issue is even available now for pre-order at TFAW.

Now, again, this could be a joke, especially since IDW said to watch out for a variant cover from 88-year-old artist Earl Norem, who happens to be unfortunately arthritic and retired. But damn, tell me this comic with a Norem cover wouldn’t be awesome??? Just look at the cover they did send (full cover here below)!

Moby Dick, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, and Robinson Crusoe are easily some of civilization’s most accomplished and cherished works of literature. But what would it be like if frothing invaders had been holding Melville, Stevenson, and Defoe at gunpoint, forcing them to reimagine their renowned works through the bloodshot eyes of a crazed, skull-faced Martian?

They’d probably be a lot cooler, right?

Right!

This 48-page [non-existent?] one-shot will [won’t?] be written by Phil Hester (damn you, Phil, don’t mess with me!), Beau Smith, and Neil Kleid, with [without?] artists John McCrea, Kelley Jones, and Carlos Valenzuela, and will [won’t?] be released on June 5, 2013.

Here’s more information [cruel lies?] from IDW and Mars Attacks:

Experience Melville’s supreme terror as he realizes a fearsome white whale is no match for a face-to-face encounter with a Martian! Delve into true horror as the Martian High Command sets their sights on weaponizing Dr. Jekyll’s volatile serum! And find yourself exploring the deepest reaches of one Martian’s existential war when he finds himself marooned on Earth!

They may seem like a mindless horde bent on destruction, but when viewed through the prism of great, enduring literature, it’s clear that we have a lot to learn from our alien overlords.

You’re welcome, Earth.

Imagine if the April Fool’s Day joke is actually that this is REAL and that they’re making everyone think it’s fake? If that’s the case, I will give IDW a one-shot to the kisser!!! And then purchase this comic and enjoy the fuck out of it.

We’ll see come April 1st if I receive an email from IDW mocking me for writing about their [fabricated?] Mars Attacks: Classics Obliterated comic or an email chiding me for ever doubting them.
