Robert Redford and Modok

Marvel Studios has confirmed various internet rumors that Robert Redford will be playing the villain MODOK in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Check out the first look at Redford in character here below!

The Hollywood icon will be joining Avengers stars Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson Cobie Smulders, and Scarlett Johansson, along with Anthony Mackie, Toby Jones, Hayley Atwell, Emily VanCamp, with Frank Grillo as Crossbones and Georges St-Pierre as Batroc The Leaper, all set to star in the film directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.

When news of Redford’s involvement in the project broke nearly two weeks ago, it was originally announced that he’d be playing a senior S.H.I.E.L.D. official. That character now has a name: George Tarelton, known to comic book fans as the inept AIM agent transformed by the terrorist organization into the Mechanical Organism Designed Only for Killing, according to a press conference Marvel Studios gave Monday morning in Los Angeles.

“The vision the Russo Brothers have for Tarleton is that he’s a classically tragic figure. This will be a fall from grace story, much like Aaron Eckharts’ Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight, only instead of half his body being seared his head will grow about ten times larger, he’ll lose his Torso and he’ll have to hover around with his limbs dangling,” Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige announced at the press conference.

MODOK’s appearance in the Marvel Studios franchise has been widely speculated since AIM was announced to figure prominently in this May’s Iron Man 3.

“Yes, Mr. Redford is very excited to tackle the role,” s spokesperson for the Hollywood star said at the press conference. “This is a man whose had a prestigious career spanning almost 50 years, acting alongside such heavyweights as Marlon Brand, Meryl Streep, and, of course, Paul Newman. He’s been in two films that have won Best picture and an Academy Award for Directing Ordinary People, which also won Best Picture. He’s thrilled, of course, to be Giant Head.”

“MODOK,” Feige promptly corrected.

When asked about special effect plans for putting Redford’s famous face onto the monstrous MODOK body, Fiege replied that “The Russos’ are looking at a mixture of CGI and animatronics.”

Mr. Redford’s spokesperson, however, said that the Indecent Proposal star wants to take it in another direction, “He’s actually quite inspired by the way Galactus was pulled off in [2007’s] Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens April 4th 2014.

  1. These April Fool’s stories are a hoot to read! You could tell right from the headlines that they were fakes, but they’re still hilarious.
