Fast and Furious 6 races into theaters on May 24th, but it’s confirmed sequel, Fast and Furious 7, may lose yet another vital piece of the Fast and Furious franchise. After Justin Lin confirmed that he would not be able to direct the seventh installment – due to scheduling constraints – James Wan quickly became one of the frontrunners to helm the film. Now there is word that Dwayne Johnson may not be able to reprise his role because of scheduling conflicts of his own.
Speaking to Collider, Johnson said that his shooting schedule with Brett Ratner‘s Hercules film and the projected shooting date for Fast and Furious 7 clashes with each other in a way that will make him unable to reprise his role.
Here’s the full quote:
[A Summer shoot] is not possible for me because I’m shooting Hercules this summer starting in 6 weeks in Budapest, so, possible for them I’m not too sure. I haven’t heard anything about that and I’m pretty sure I would have gotten a phone call pretty early in the morning if that was the real plan. Not quite too sure though.
Film star Vin Diesel has said that Fast and Furious 7 would be aiming for a summer shooting date in Los Angeles, which makes it slightly more difficult for Johnson as he will be shooting Hercules overseas. So if Universal does plan to release the next chapter in summer 2014 as planned, changes to Johnson’s character would likely have to be made. Not so much that would result in a death of any kind, but more along the lines of Johnson’s presence in the film will be greatly reduced or they will have to reschedule the release of the film to a different date.
