It’s the 50th anniversary for Marvel’s X-Men, and Marvel has some big plans for everyone’s favorite mutants. Announced at C2E2 in Chicago, this fall will see the release of X-Men: Battle of the Atom, a ten issue event launching in September with Battle of the Atom #1. The story will then crossover between the regular issues of All-New X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Wolverine and the X-Men, and X-Men for two months before wrapping up in Battle of the Atom #2.

The story is all about a group of X-Men from the future coming back in time to convince the currently time-displaced original X-Men to go back to their home era. The team from the future include a new version of Wolverine, another version of The Beast, and a few more families faces.
All of the main X-Men writers will be working on the series, with Brian Michael Bendis, Brian Wood, and Jason Aaron joining forces to bring the story to life. Designs for the new characters is being handled by Art Adams. The first Battle of the Atom issue will feature art by Frank Cho, with a supposed “surprise artist” handling the second issue.
X-Men editor Nick Lowe said:
“This is a classic X-Men crossover. Huge crazy ideas moving through the biggest books we have in the X-Office.The story itself hinges on the All-New X-Men and whether or not they need to be sent back to their home time. This causes the X-Men of the past, present and future to pick sides.”
Like Lowe says, there hasn’t been a classic X-Men crossover that tied the main series together since 2010’s “Second Coming.” This also looks to be the next step in the whole big story that launched in All-New X-Men #1. I’m sure we’ll get more information about this series as we get closer to the fall.
