The Avengers 2 writer-director Joss Whedonrevealed a few weeks ago that the classic Marvel characters Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch – the rights to whom are shared by both Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox with conditions – would figure heavily in the highly anticipated sequel. One of many lingering questions now is: Who will be playing those particular roles?
The script is nearing completion, but no actors have met with Whedon or the producers as yet to discuss joining the cast. Of course now that hardly means that certain actors cannot be at least thought of for these integral roles, and if the rumor going around proves to be accurate, Irish actress Saoirse Ronan is at the top of Marvel’s list to play the Scarlet Witch.
Although Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch – the children of X-Men villain Magneto in the Marvel Universe – are of Eastern European origin, the decision has apparently been made to portray them in Avengers 2 as British. Ronan, who recently turned 19 and would be 20 by the time the movie was in production, fits Whedon and company’s vision for the Scarlet Witch perfectly.
Now we are left to wonder if Ronan will actually be offered the part. As a rising young star who is also a genuinely gifted actress I don’t see why she wouldn’t be offered the role. That’s hardly a concrete confirmation that this will even transpire though, but it’s good that Whedon has a strong idea of who he wants to see in the part.
Quicksilver, on the other hand, is being described as “Euro” and “edgy” (EURO POOCHY?!). No actors have been mentioned in connection with the role yet, but there is no shortage of young British talent who could easily fill out the character’s spandex one-sie.
Ronan’s past credits include Atonement, The Lovely Bones, and Hanna. Most recently she starred in the Stephenie Meyer adaptation The Host and can next be seen in Neil Jordan’s horror film Byzantium, opening in June, and in next year’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, directed by Wes Anderson.
