What sounds like it came out from The Onion may actually have some weight to it. Considering all the big names and Oscar-nominated directors that Marvel Studios have been able to sign on in the past, Glenn Close possibly joining the cast of James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy comes as no surprise. The news comes hot off the heels that the studio was in talks with John C. Reilly, who would play Rhonamm Dey, a character that has been described as the “face of humanity” would be an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and act as the Guardians’ liaison.
According to Deadline, Close would play the leader of the Nova Corps, which has been described as “the intergalactic space patrol.” The character that she is the running for could be compared to the kind of character Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) was in The Avengers movie.
Filming is expected to begin in June, so we should get a confirmation of the recent casting rumors that have been surfacing in the past few weeks, plus whether or not Zoe Saldana is officially signed on to play Gamora. This role could also be the so called “peer” role that Hugh Laurie, Alan Rickman, and Ken Watanabe are on the shortlist for.
While Dey has been portrayed as the leader of the Nova Corps, the Dey that Reilly is in the running for will is said to be human, so it should be interesting to see who Close ends up playing.
Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, and Michael Rooker all have starring roles in the highly anticipated film that is scheduled to hit theaters August 1, 2014.
