For all of us that grew up watching the Star Wars films in the ’70s and ’80s, witnessing the rebirth of this wonderful franchise is a mixed blessing. I mean, it’s great that today’s kids are being exposed to the greatest space themed franchise to ever exist (suck it, Trekkies), but they are also being subjected to horrific entities like Jar Jar Binks. Luckily, Star Wars Thumb Doodles: The Epic Saga At Your Fingertips focuses on the Holy Trilogy, Episode IV, V and VI.

Okay, first of all, let’s discuss the supplies. It comes equipped with a two dual color pencil made to look like lightsabers, one blue end and one red end. There are also ink pads for use in making the finger and thumb prints in the activity book. There are instructions on how to utilize the supplies and how to keep them clean and unmarred while in use. This will definitely be handy for the younger artists.

The directions on how to create the characters and vehicles are very easy to understand. Starting with the most rudimentary steps and progressively diagramming how to create each one, we are given page after page of lessons. This is immediately followed by a large section of pages that have elaborate backgrounds on which to reproduce the famous scenes and battles! I would have loved this as a kid! Truth be told, I am pretty much loving it as an adult.

Covering all the main characters (from both sides) and vehicles such as AT-ATs and TIE Fighters, this is a load of fun. Once you have used up the forty or so pages, you can continue the fun on any paper of your choosing. This will be a great gift for the young padawan in your family, no doubt about it. Allow them to embrace their imaginations while immersing them in one of the greatest stories ever. I know I’m a little biased, I do have a Stormtrooper tattoo after all. But seriously, how often do we really encourage our kids to do something that doesn’t involve electronics? Make this your first step towards that goal Besides, who wouldn’t dig a bit of homemade Star Wars art for their office or fridge?
