Director Guillermo del Toro was in Japan recently to promote his new movie Pacific Rim, which has inexplicably and inexcusably done poorly here in the States (not even breaking $100 million yet), but is thankfully doing better overseas (currently at around $247 million, bringing its grand total to a decent $344 million so far). One foreign market the movie is expected to do well in is, of course, Japan, who has been known to enjoy a big monster movie or two.
A video was released of del Toro in Japan with co-stars Rinko Kikuchi and Mana Ashida checking out some of the sights, and it proves yet again why the director is so gosh darn awesome. Here he is, a hugely popular big Hollywood director (despite the box office not always reflecting the love), and yet he continues to see the world with a warm, sort of childlike wonder, which you’ll see as he visits Gundum Front in Tokyo, where he gets Christmas morning eyes on multiple occasions.

Sadly and unfortunately for him; Japan doesn’t seem to love him back. As the box office results show that PR did dismal on it’s opening weekend. Apparently Japan only loves their own mecha/kaiju sagas. They don’t even like Rinko Kikuchi to begin with. So if there ever gets to be a sequel, Japan should get zero jaegers and should be completely destroyed. Ironically, the only place it did well was China; so go figure…
