So you’ve managed to convince the woman of the house that a man cave is one of the essential rooms, only behind the kitchen and the bathroom. She claims the concept is almost as immature as the “No Girls Allowed” sign on your tree house from your elementary school days. I’m happily not one of those women. In fact, I’ll probably help you hang the beer signs!
In addition, I understand. This room is more than just a room. It’s a place where your geekiness can be expressed, where you and your buddies can relax (and drink), and where you can get your gaming on.
For the ultimate “gamer cave,” make sure you have these five essential items…
Big Screen HDTV
You shouldn’t have to squint to be able to see Master Chief destroy the Covenant. A big screen HDTV is the most essential item for your gamer cave (aside from the games and game console, of course). With video game graphics that almost seem like reality, a TV with a clear image is important.
Additionally, you need a TV that quickly responds to your every move in the game. Any input lag could ruin the entire gaming experience. Look for a TV that comes with a “game mode” to avoid this delay.
Gaming Rockers
You and your guys need a comfy seat for hours of gaming, right? Invest in at least two gaming rockers so that you and a friend can use. They prop you up in the perfect position to sit comfortably all day.
Fiber-optic Internet
As any gamer knows, a slow Internet connection can be the difference between your next kill or the reason your opponent is somehow able to dodge your bullets, get around you, and knife you in the back. The best way to avoid these delays is with the latest Fiber Optic technology. Fiber-optic Internet brings the most reliable, fastest, and consistent speeds to your man cave, far more than any other service out there. Seriously, just look at this super boring chart by the FCC. The problem is, good luck finding a provider in your area that has it.
The only two providers I’m aware of that have 100% pure fiber is Google and Verizon. As of this year, Google offers the fastest speeds available, which maxes out at 1gbps! However, it is only in Kansas City, MO, and Austin, TX. That pretty much leaves out 99% of everyone else (those greedy 1%’ers!). So, if you’re not in either of those cities, you’re better off seeing if Verizon FiOS Internet is available in your area. And if you’re one of the lucky few, then you’ll be able to enjoy uninterrupted real-time gaming.
Refrigerator
It’d just be too much effort to walk all the way upstairs and grab something to eat or drink. To save you those 15 steps (each way), put a refrigerator in your gamer cave. So next time you run out of salsa to accompany that bag of tortilla chips, you’ll be able to pour some more and get back to your gaming rocker before the next game starts.
Headset
Invest in a proper surround sound headset. Whether you’re a PC or Console gamer, something like Tritton or Turtle Beach will do just fine. It definitely adds a nice touch to the gaming experience.
However, note to self: the newest Xbox Slim model (Xbox 360 E) does not include an optical output. Therefore, if you already made the purchase, you’ll need to consider other alternatives, due to the failure that is known as Microsoft!
Extras
If your buds have to sit out during a game, keep them entertained with some non-video games. Ping-Pong, pool, air hockey, or foosball tables are great options. You can keep the competitive spirit up and your view of the TV won’t be blocked.
If you have some of your own ideas, as far as what you’d like to see in your ultimate gamer/man cave, let me know. I’d love to hear it!
