The Counselor Movie PosterThe Counselor
Director: Ridley Scott
Screenwriter: Cormac McCarthy
Cast: Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt, Édgar Ramírez, Rosie Pérez
20th Century Fox
Rated R | 117 Minutes
Release Date: October 25, 2013

Directed by Ridley Scott (Prometheus), The Counselor stars Michael Fassbender (Shame) as a nondescript lawyer whose one-time dalliance with the dangerous world of drug trafficking spirals out of control.

With a screenplay by Cormac McCarthy, the novelist who wrote No Country for Old Men and The Road, The Counselor is a chronicle of destruction – a bleak and brutal story of greed and the inevitability of suffering and violence.

Fassbender’s character, simply known as Counselor, gets mixed up with Reiner (Javier Bardem), a charismatic businessman who moonlights as a drug lord. Reiner lives an extravagant life complete with exotic clothes, high-end sports cars, and a ultra-modern villa populated with buff bodyguards and gorgeous women in bikinis.

Among those women is his girlfriend, Malkina (Cameron Diaz), a femme fatale who is in control at all times. Malkina is a hunter – a predator – with an affinity for watching her two pet cheetahs chase jackrabbits across the Chihuahuan Desert. Reiner knows he isn’t the smartest man and begins to suspect that the cunning Malkina will be his undoing.

It’s time to scare it up, my fellow geeks! Monsters University sees its home release, and surprisingly, the Blu-ray edition of Pixar’s latest feature is wicked good. Explore Monsters University with me, shall we?

James P. Sullivan (John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) may have given the impression they were always best buddies in Monsters, Inc., but Monsters University proves just the opposite. Travel back in time with Sulley and Mikey to their young adulthood, when Sulley’s pomposity and Mike’s unabashed idealism contrasted with their older personalities. Mike craves to scare for a living, despite his less-than-menacing appearance, and must prove to naysayers that he belongs at the Scare School. He works ceaselessly to understand ways to haunt and chill. Sulley, on the other hand, thinks his family name and reputation will lead him on a road to success, but his egotism impairs his image and potential. The two must collaborate with the non-impressive Oozma Kappa fraternity to save their spots in the Scare School.

Argent Starr #1Argent Starr

Release Date: September 2013
Issues #1
Issue #2
Cover Price: $3.99

What a wild ride this series is…I received both issue one and two of Argent Starr and read them back to back. As a matter of fact, I read them twice just to make sure I could give this a proper review. There is a lot of information in these two comics, creating a very fast paced, albeit confusing, story. No, let me rephrase that. The first issue confused me but the second one brought it all into focus. Allow me to explain further.

The first issue starts off with professional gambler (and polymorph) Rey Zyten arriving in New Vegas, Nevada to make a little money and hide out for a while. We are also shown super-thief Lazarus Stern stealing an artifact we soon find out is called the Cardinal Stone and that it is so powerful that it can destroy entire planets. Plus, there is Argent Starr who comes with his own bodyguard and talking cat. It is disjointed to the point that it feels like the reader is being bombarded with so much data that it becomes difficult to process. That said, after reading the second issue, so much more becomes clear.

Star Wars Title Card Lens Flare

In a bit of an interesting twist, it’s being reported that Oscar-winning Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine screenwriter Michael Arndt is no longer working on the script for Star Wars: Episode VII.

Instead the movie is now being written by J.J. Abrams, who is also directing, and Lawrence Kasdan, who previously worked on the scripts for The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and who was brought in as a consultant and to possibly write other planned installments in the franchise not long after Arndt was initially hired.

Continue below to read the full announcement, include a rundown of who’s working on the movie so far and their previous credits.
