Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

The long-in-development movie adaptation of Naughty Dog’s hit video game series Uncharted is moving forward again. After an unsuccessful run with American Hustle director David O. Russell attached to direct—which famously went south quickly with fans after reports of Mark Wahlberg starring in the lead Nathan Drake role and Russell wanting to add Drake’s father and uncle for a family element surfaced online—and also the hiring of The Illusionist director Neil Burger to try his hand at making the movie ultimately not working out, a new director has been brought in.

It’s being reported that Seth Gordon, the director behind comedies like Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief, has entered into negotiations for the job.

Drake is a charismatic character and humor is a major part of his makeup, so it’s not surprising to see a more comedy-friendly director being brought in. Not long ago This Is The End writing/directing duo Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg revealed that they had been approached many times about working on the movie, so you can see the humor being made a priority. For better or worse Rogen and Goldberg have turned the offer down every time, despite being fans of the games, for fear of the inevitable Indiana Jones comparisons (the games are clearly inspired by Indy and Tomb Raider, that’s no secret). The most recent draft of the script was penned by Safe House writer David Guggenheim.

Gordon has experience in video game-related movies as well, though not the way you might imagine. He directed the amazing documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, which looked at one man’s quest to dethrone the Donkey Kong world record holder. He’s also a director and executive producer on the TV show The Goldbergs, and has directed episodes of hit shows like Parks and Recreation, Community, The Office, and Modern Family.

Specific story details are unknown, but the movie will follow a similar story to the first game, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, where Nathan Drake, his friend Sully, and a journalist named Elena search for the lost treasure of El Dorado.
