Guardians Of The Galaxy headphones

“Hooked On A Feeling”, the 1974 cover song by the band Blue Suede, has found a new life to a brand new audience and generation via its inclusion in the trailer for the highly anticipated release of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, according to Billboard. The movie trailer was released last Wednesday, bringing attention not only to the obscure superhero team, but also to the song, a quintessential slice of early 1970s pop confection.

The song is best remembered for its sticks-in-your-brain-and-doesn’t-let-go “Oogachaka” chants, which is used to great effect in the trailer as it plays during an action montage, and also when main character Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) has his headphones confiscated and that’s the song that’s playing (we also get to hear the chorus at the end of the trailer) when we see one of the characters listen to it via headphones, and then it plays during an action montage, ending off the preview with the chorus. Over 2,000 sales of the song were estimated in one day, its highest total ever in the digital realm. (In 2008, half that amount had sold.)

In the week prior to the trailer’s release, the Blue Swede cover of “Hooked on a Feeling, according to Billboard, “sold a negligible figure.”

Once the trailer hit, Guardians director told Total Film that the song is actually used in the movie, not just part of the marketing:

Yes, ‘Hooked On A Feeling’ is used in the movie. That and a lot of other old songs are on Quill’s mixed tape in his Sony Walkman.

It’s one of the few things he has from Earth. I don’t think of it as a joke, because it’s very dear to him. It’s the umbilical cord that connects him to earth and the home and family he lost.

“Hooked on a Feeling” was first recorded by B.J. Thomas in 1968 and sported a more down-to-earth, personal kind of arrangement than the bombastically produced and arranged Blue Suede rendition. The Swedish rock band’s version of the song reached Number 1 on the Billboard charts just about 40 years ago, during the Spring of 1974.

The song is currently available for purchase as an MP3 Download.

Guardians of the Galaxy will be released nationwide in theaters on August 1, 2014.
