The primary goal when making a new video game—whether it be an action game or horror game or fantasy game—is to make it entertaining above all other things. But that doesn’t mean that a game can’t have a very serious tone and be about something very real.

When it comes to games about war, usually the player steps into the boots of a soldier or some other bad ass who battles their way through swarms of enemies. Games like the Call of Duty and Battlefield franchises are the first to come to mind. In a new game from Polish indie developer 11 bit studios, This War of Mine, things are much, much different.

In this game you play as innocent civilians stuck in the crossfire of a war being fought, and the goal is not to fight (unless necessary) but to survive. Continue reading for more information and to see a teaser trailer for the game.

The game will be all about doing whatever it takes to survive, and making the choices you feel are necessary to keep yourself and those you care about alive. During the day time it’s too dangerous to venture out of your hideout, so you spend that time focusing on things like upgrading the shelter, caring for yourself and other survivors, trading, and crafting items. At night, you can venture out in search for food and medicine and weapons and other useful items.

DESCRIPTION:

This War Of Mine provides an experience of war seen from an entirely new angle. For the very first time you do not play as an elite soldier, rather a group of civilians trying to survive in a besieged city. During the day snipers outside stop you from leaving your refuge, so you need to focus on maintaining your hideout. At night you get a chance to scavenge nearby locations for items that will help you stay alive.

Make life-and-death decisions driven by your conscience. Try to protect everybody from your shelter or sacrifice some of them to endure the hardships. During war, there are no good or bad decisions; there is only survival. The sooner you realize that, the better.

The game is inspired by real-life events, as lead designer Michal Drozdowski explains:

“While designing a new game, we came across an article that described how one man survived in a besieged city. We learned about his hardships and the horror of that experience. We decided to work around this idea and make something real, something that moves people and makes them stop think for a second. It’s about time that games, just like any other art form, start talking about important things.”

No firm release window for This War of Mine has been announced yet, only that it will likely be sometime in 2014. The game is currently being developed primarily for PC with other platforms possible as time moves forward.
