J.J. Abrams Takes Over Another ‘Star’ Franchise With ‘Stargate’ Reboot

JJ Abrams

Star Trek, Star Wars, and now”¦ Stargate!

J.J. Abrams, the powerhouse director with a passion for lens flare, has been tapped to take over Roland Emmerich‘s planned Stargate reboot. In an announcement that seems to have come out of nowhere, MGM stated in their official press release that, “If there was ever a director worthy of taking on such a vast and loved universe with an exponential amount of worlds to explore, it’s J.J. Abrams. We couldn’t be more thrilled to have him on board.”

If that news isn’t enough, Abrams offered a brief written statement, released by MGM’s website, about the team he’ll be working with.

“I was a bit hesitant to delve into another movie franchise that is so widely adored – not to mention one that begins with the word ‘star’ in its title – but the fact that Damon will be working with Roland on the script had me changing my tune very quickly.”

That’s right – Damon Lindelof will be involved as well, meaning any questions you want answered regarding the project will most likely remain unanswered even after their tentative July 2018 release date.

The films are a long ways away at this point, but Abrams did mention one actor whom they’re eyeing for a certain wisecracking colonel:

“Kurt Russell and Richard Dean Anderson both played the character of Colonel Jack O’Neill in their respective Stargate tenures with great tenacity and wit. We’re looking for someone with a similar bravado who can really pull off the cynicism of O’Neill. Personally, I think Simon Pegg would be great.”

  2. I agree with Bob, I hate April Fools Day. Besides any announcement would have to somehow include Richard Dean Anderson with at least a walk in part if not a General in the movie or fans would be upset. AH , it’s nice to dream about but don’t mess with us like this, lol.

  6. thank F**K this was an april fool! there are quite enough lens-flares in the world of cinema as it is without abrams and lindelof fruitlessly farting more into the ether.

  8. My biggest hope for this franchise was for the SG1, Atlantis, SGU Universe to return in some fashion, with the casts from those series, if any one outside of the TV show was to get on board & make a big budget movie then Abrams would definitely seem like a great pick.

Personally though I’d rather have some lower budget TV movies, set back in each franchise.

I don’t mind seeing what Emmerich would do as a sequel or sequels to his original 1994 movie, but the TV show did so much with the concept that it’s really quite difficult to take things in their own direction.
If there was going to be genuine sequels to the original movie then the first should have come out a few years after the original film.

If that happened then the great TV shows that spun off from the original feature may never have been made, nor would they have been the same.

I still hold some hope in my heart that one day something proper, canonically connected to SG1/A/U will be released.

  9. Great yet another reason not to watch it as JJ abrams screws yet another great series

  10. I’m assuming April fools but let’s face it, as far as hard ass colonels go… Simon Pegg only ever plays one character which is unfortunately a moron. He would not be a good o’neil. (With 1 “L”) ! Kurt Russell portrayed a much more believable colonel than Anderson who came across as more of ‘your dad pretending to play army’ which was embarrassing at times. Then again you pay peanuts and you get monkeys… The TV show was never in a position to hire great actors…

  11. Better be can’t see Simon playing that roll. Bring back universe! Best Star gate ever. Loved Atlantis though.

  12. More focus on the story, less J.J. Abrams.
