(I used to love that game.)
Spider-Man has teamed up with the X-Men countless times in the comics and video games and on Saturday morning television. Yet the odds of the two Marvel Comics properties uniting on the silver screen has long seemed unlikely due to different movie studios owning their rights and being heavily reticent to crossovers.
In a somewhat unprecedented move, however, it’s been revealed that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will feature as its post-credits highlight a special preview of X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Here’s a description of the Future Past preview, according to Empire:
The scene featured sees Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, Lucas Till’s Havok and Evan Jonigkeit’s Toad taking on William Stryker (Josh Helman) and his military men. Without wishing to spoil anything, let’s just say that Mystique once again demonstrates her formidable fighting skills in the brief segment.
It’s not exactly a forerunner to a cinematic adaptation of Secret Wars II, now is it? When you look at it, it’s more of a case of two studios with huge superhero tentpole blockbusters opening a few weeks apart hoping to sponge off of their competition’s potential box office success. But if this arrangement proves to be a winner for both Sony and Fox then perhaps we can expect to see the studios’ respective legal departments loosening up in regards to the crossover possibilities for their Marvel properties.
The Marc Webb-directed Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Paul Giamatti, Sally Field, and Chris Cooper to name a few. The super Spider sequel is out now in the U.K. and will open in U.S. theaters on May 2, 2014 but only after it premieres in almost every other nation on Earth first.
