If I was a betting man I would lay down a few of my hard-earned pennies on the likelihood that you are a Star Wars fan. Not only because you made the excellent choice to read articles on Geeks of Doom, but also because everyone loves Star Wars!
And if, like me, you are still hungry to find out about even the smallest of details about the movies – or the universe – then Elstree 1976, which currently has a Kickstarter campaign, could be the film for you.
May 25, 1977 is a date ingrained into the minds of Star Wars fans: George Lucas’s record-breaking pop culture behemoth was released to the people of planet Earth. But before the world was swept up in a sci-fi storm there was a movie studio in England where the universe of the most famous movie in history was being created: Heroes with lightsabers fought battles to the death; pilots in red uniforms boarded x-wing star fighters; quotable lines were being uttered; and future non-stop debates were being formed over whom shot first.
In scenes rich in detail, movie extras strutted about in their various uniforms oblivious to the impact those few moments on screen would have on their lives – whether they hoped for it or not. How has this affected them? This is the story of the smallest roles in the biggest movie. This is Elstree 1976.
Directed by British filmmaker Jon Spira whose credits also include Anyone Can Play Guitar – a documentary about the music scene in Oxford, England from which the likes of Radiohead and Supergrass came – this looks like it will be another touching and funny story about how people in the entertainment industry change when their lives take an unexpected twist.
There’s still time to get involved in the Kickstarter campaign whose goodies range from the basic blog access to the elaborate “corporate sponsorship package” (with a private screening and “in association with *your company*” pre-title credit!) and a host of DVD and Blu-ray bundles in-between.
