Unlock the Truth band photo 2014

Imagine that your band is on such a roll that, over the course of a year, you get to open for the likes of Motorhead, Guns N’ Roses (video here below), and Queens of the Stone Age; play at Coachellea; tour the nation on the Vans Warped Tour; Sony Records has just signed you to a six-record deal; you’ve signed a book deal to tell of your experiences, and a documentary is being filmed about you.

Now imagine that you are only 12 or 13 years old.

It’s the dream of every kid who is holed up in a garage banging away at their instrument. But for three little dudes from Brooklyn, NY, the dream has become a reality! Unlocking the Truth is a heavy metal band consisting of a trio of friends who are still in middle school. Guitarist Malcolm Brickhouse, 13, bassist Alec Atkins, 13, and drummer Jarad Dawkins, 12, started out as friends having play dates and then “play” took on a whole new meaning when the youngsters decided to form a metal band.

The boys would play wherever they could around the New York area, often outside in places like Times Square and Washington Square Park. It was during a performance at the latter that they were “discovered” by legendary drummer Steve Jordan (Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Keith Richards). They are currently co-managed by Welcome Back Kotter writer Alan Sachs and Malcolm’s mother Annette Jackson.

The recently inked deal with Sony guarantees the group two records and gives Sony the option to extend for four more. All told, the deal is worth up to $1.7 million for the band. Additionally, the boys have forged a deal with Penguin Publishing for a book about their meteoric rise. It should be in stores by Christmas time. A documentary is also in the works.

But, lest you think that all of this success will derail them from their education, their parents are there to make sure otherwise. Jarad’s mother, Tabatha Dawkins, says “School work comes first. If their school work is not done, they don’t play.”

Congratulations to Unlocking the Truth. We at Geeks of Doom wish you all the success in the world and can’t wait to be reviewing that sixth album!
