As a director Kevin Smith has distanced himself from the comedy movies he’s best known for, and has instead embraced much smaller budget independent projects as of late.
After his first indie effort, the very un-Smith-like horror flick Red State, he took some time off from features to focus on various other things he has going on. But lately he’s been quite busy. Smith just finished a second indie horror titled Tusk, which is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and he’s already moving into his next movie, titled Yoga Hosers.
Now comes word that Johnny Depp will be appearing in the movie, which stars his daughter Lily-Rose Depp and Smith’s daughter Harley Quinn Smith.
Yoga Hosers is the second movie in what Smith calls his True North trilogy (the first movie being Tusk), with each of the three movies being inspired by Canadian myths and culture.
It follows two teenage girls named Colleen Collette (Lily-Rose Depp) and Colleen McKenzie (Harley Quinn Smith), who are both very much into yoga and who, in something of a full circle for fans of Smith’s movies, work at a convenience store called Eh-2-Zed. One day an ancient evil emerges from the earth, threatening a big 12th grade party the girls have been invited to, so they seek out and team up with legendary man-hunter from Montreal named Guy Lapointe (Depp) to stop it.
In addition to Depp, his daughter, and Smith’s daughter, other cast includes Tony Hale, Natasha Lyonne, Austin Butler, Adam Brody, Tyler Posey, and Jason Mewes. On top of that, the entire cast of Tusk, Michael Parks, Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez, Ralph Garman, and Harley Morenstein, will all also star in Yoga Hosers.
The full cast of Tusk was recently said to be coming back for another Smith project about the Christmas demon Krampus called Anti-Claus, though it’s not clear if that’s the third movie in the True North trilogy or another project entirely.
