For this week’s edition of Black Metal Friday, I have chosen a brand new track that was just released as part of the Adult Swim Singles Collection. “From the Kettle Onto the Coil” is the first new music from San Francisco band Deafheaven since their massive breakthrough album Sunbather topped many a critics “best of” lists at the end of 2013.
Listen to “From the Kettle Onto the Coil” here below.
Deafheaven is an incredibly divisive band. They have as many rabid fans as detractors. Black Metal purists hate them, but those people hate anything that deviates from the formula. I’m constantly reading tirades from these people all over the net about why Deafheaven aren’t even metal, much less black metal. The band seems completely unconcerned by these pundits and are not really helping the cause by sporting one of the most douchey hipster images imaginable. Nonetheless, make no mistake: Deafheaven are not only a black metal band, they are the future of black metal.
I have always said that great music will ultimately transcend the fads and fashions under which it was created. Time will be the gauge of Deafheaven’s influence on the genre of black metal, but in the meantime, anyone who dismisses music this incredibly awesome and innovative just because of the way a band looks or because they fear change is completely clueless in my book.
