Here’s a project I am highly excited about — an illustrated Celtic Frost tribute graphic novel!
Coming this Fall is Morbid Tales!: An Illustrated Tribute to Celtic Frost, a graphic novel anthology from CV Comics that documents the fictional/factual history of the Swiss metal band that will delve more into the music rather than lyrics. The group, fronted by Tom G. Warrior (currently in the band Triptykon) released several records in the 80s to much acclaim, like their 1984 debut Morbid Tales before they dove a bit too far into the experimental realm (Into the Pandemonium) and then completely alienated their thrash/blac metal fanbase with their failed foray into hair metal (Cold Lake).
CVComics has released a trailer for their upcoming book, which you can view here below.
The music in the trailer is a cover of one of my favorite Celtic Frost songs — “The Usurper” — performed by Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual) and Childbite, and the track will be included in a planned limited edition vinyl record of CF covers being put out by CVComics and Corpse Flower Records (the vinyl purchase will include an MP3 download code as well). I spoke with Mark Rudolph, the mastermind behind the project (he also did 2012’s Satan is Alive: A tribute to Mercyful Fate), and he said that there would be “a varied group of bands covering all and I mean ALL eras of Celtic Frost,” stating that he “wanted all aspects of Tom G. Warriors projects represented.”
The 155-page graphic novel will contain illustrations and illustrated anecdotes from a varied bunch of metal musicians/authors. Not surprisingly and very awesomely, Chuck BB — co-creator and artist on Black Metal graphic novel series — will be contributing to the project.
Here’s the info on who’s involved in this project:
This time around we have work from Justin Bartlett, Jason McGregor, Bruno Guerriero, Lars Krantz, Chuck BB, Shawn Knight, J. Bennett, Eamon Espey, Ed Luce. Jeremy Baum, Johnny Ryan, Josh Bayer, Jacob Hamrick, J.T. Dockery, Kelly Larson, Kim Holm, Michael Hacker, Mike Erdody, Slasher Dave, Tim Shagrat, Mark Rudolph, Sam Wolf, Tim Sievert, Mark Thompson, Scott Murphy, David Liljemark, Kevin Cross, Rob Mills and a few others to announce soon.
Forewords from Tomas Lindberg (At The Gates) and Ivar Bjornson (Enslaved) with other pieces from Joel Grind (Toxic Holocaust), Flo Swartz (Pyogenesis), Ben Ash (Carcass),Scott Kelly (Neurosis), Fenriz (Darkthrone), Dan Lilker (Brutal Truth), Jeff Wagner(author of Mean Deviation), Shane Embury (Napalm Death), Greg Macintosh (Paradise Lost), Trevor Peres (Obituary), Scott Carlson and Matt Olivo (Repulsion), Orvar Safstrom (Nirvanna 2002), Attila Csihar (Mayhem), Chris Reifert (Autopsy) and John Paradiso (Evoken).
I’m a huge fan of Celtic Frost (here’s a photo I took a few months ago of my CF collection) and have been following Tom G. Warrior’s career for decades now, so I’m really interested in what Rudolph and the vast array of writers and artists come up with for this anthology. Pre-orders are set to go up in mid-September.
