Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, just announced on Twitter that he will be Black Adam!
The wrestler turned actor posted the news with an image of the DC villain Black Adam fighting with his main nemesis, Shazam (formerly known as Captain Marvel). Here’s what he wrote: “Kneel at his feet or get crushed by his boot.” My honor to become.. #BlackAdam #TheAntiHero #DCComics”
In his Twitter post, which the DC Comics Twitter account then retweeted, Johnson used the hashtag “TheAntiHero,” which is how the character is depicted in recent comics, as opposed to the straight-up villain he was conceived as.
Not much else is known at this time, but Johnson did reveal a few months ago that he and DC, which owns the Black Adam character, have been talking for years about a character for him to play and that he met with Warner Bros. early this year. He later stated that he’d locked in a role with WB and that the character he is playing “has the power of Superman,” which most people assumed was Shazam.
Now that The Rock is Black Adam, who will be Shazam?
Warner Bros. is the studio behind the DC Cinematic Universe, which is currently being sculpted around the events of Man Of Steel and its sequel, Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice. The studio currently has 9 DC Comics movies in the works releasing beginning in 2016 and ending in 2020. It’s assumed that a Shazam movie is one of these yet-to-be-named titles.
