Wondering what’s new for October 2014 in Netflix Instant? There’s plenty, but I’m here to give you some recommendations, since Netflix likes to make it difficult for you to figure out what’s new in their service in movies and television series.

Some of my favorite picks include Sons Of Anarchy: Season 6, The Walking Dead: Season 4, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Galaxy Quest, Django Unchained, and Tombstone. There’s plenty more, but below are some of my favorite picks for the month.

Note – some are up today, while others will be released throughout the month.

Top Netflix Picks for October 2014

• The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) (Available 10/22) – Here’s a biggie coming this October: the second installment in The Hunger Games film franchise, which picks up after Katniss wins the games in the first movie, but is not forced back into the arena whilst a rebellion against the Capitol is brewing.
• Galaxy Quest (1999) – Galaxy Quest, otherwise known as one of the best Star Trek movies ever. Starring Tim Allen in a very Shatner-esque Captain Kirk role, the film is a wonderful combination of science fiction, comedy, and nostalgia.
• Sleepless In Seattle (1993) – Before Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan got mail (but after they faced the volcano), they were sleepless in Seattle. A sweet romantic comedy inspired by 1957’s An Affair to Remember. Tom Hanks anything = win.
• My Father The Hero (1994) – One of your more creepy comedies, My Father The Hero is a remake of a French film. French actor Gérard Depardieu reprises his role as a divorced father who goes on vacation with this teenaged daughter, a young Katherine Heigl, who proceeds to let people think her father is her lover in hopes of impressing a boy. Yeah, creepy.
• Tombstone (1993) – A western starring some big-name actors from the 1990s playing famous Wild West figures like Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell), Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer) in Tombstone, AZ, during the events of the O.K. Corral
• Carrie (2013) – A remake of the 197, adapted from the Stephen King novel. Here, Chloe Moretz plays the titular character, a teenager who’s bullied at school, but possesses powers her religious zealot mother disapproves of.
• Django Unchained (2012) – (Available 10/25) A Western from writer/director Quentin Tarantino about a free black Northern man who’s abducted and sold into slavery in the deep South. But, as every QT story goes, the protagonist will have his revenge, in this case, once he’s unchained. Leonardo DiCaprio plays a wretched slave owner, while Benedict Cumberbatch has a small role as a more benevolent slave owner (if it was possible for a “benevolent slave owner” to exist).
• Three Fugitives (1989) – Martin Short plays a bumbling criminal who takes a real criminal, Nick Nolte, hostage while he’s trying to rob a bank (to get money to pay for his ill daughter’s medical expenses) and the two get mistaken for partners.
• The Wedding Planner (2001) – I’m not big on romantic comedies, but for some reason, I enjoyed The Wedding Planner, where JLo plays the title planner. The problem is, she starts to have feelings for the groom — Matthew McConaughey, uh oh!
• Sons of Anarchy: Season 6 (Available 10/25) – Season 7, the final season, is currently on FX Network, so if you need to catch up, Season 6 will be available later this month on Netflix. And, it has all the violence you could want in a TV show. See what happens when Jax (Charlie Hunnam) tries to balance his home life with his wife and children with that of his role as head of the outlaw biker club, SAMCRO. Lots of shit goes down on this season.
• The Walking Dead: Season 4 – Season 4 of AMC’s The Walking Dead was pretty frustration, as half the time the group of survivors of a zombie apocalypse were split up and you were like, just friggin’ find each other all ready! Season 5 begins on AMC soon, so catch up on Netflix so you’re ready!
• Team America: World Police (2004) – From the creators of South Park comes an insane action-comedy film starring puppets. That’s really all you need to know.
