Tom Hanks in Big

Taking popular movies from the past and reworking them as potential TV shows of the future is all the rage right now. A TV version of Beverly Hills Cop was in the works for a while but never played out. A show based on the ’80s movie Real Genius and the ’90s movie Problem Child were just recently announced. And who can forget the sports drama Necessary Roughness, which is based of course on the classic football comedy of the same name (wait, that can’t be right…).

Now comes word of a pair of new TV shows being developed that are based on hit movies. The first is based on the Tom Hanks classic Big, while the other will be based on the buddy cop movie Rush Hour, which starred Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker.

20th Century Fox TV has made a script plus penalty commitment (meaning they can still back out and pay a penalty, if they so choose) to the TV version of Big, which will be adapted by Kevin Biegel and Mike Royce, the duo behind the recent (and recently canceled) Fox comedy Enlisted.

The show is being planned as a half-hour comedy event series about what it means to be a kid, what it means to be an adult, and how the two things can sometimes be confused in today’s world.

Biegel also co-created the TBS series Cougar Town with Bill Lawrence, who happens to be working on the Rush Hour TV adaptation. Lawrence and Blake McCormick are writing the script for the series for Warner Brothers Television, but no deal has been made with a network for it yet.

The show will, just as the movie, follow a cop from Hong Kong who’s assigned to a case in Los Angeles and forced to work with a cocky L.A.P.D. officer who has no interest in having a partner.

Brett Ratner, who directed the movies, will be an executive producer on the show along with Arthur Sarkissian and Jeff Ingold.
