Edgar Wright dropping out of Ant-Man wasn’t the best thing to happen to the film, but there was some good that came out of it. Adam McKay was brought in to polish the script, and even film star Paul Rudd had a hand in some of the rewrites. While too many writers working on one script could muck up the story, McKay and Rudd know each other well enough not to step on each others’ toes.
And now that McKay has had a taste of what it has been like to work at Marvel — he was even one of the frontrunners to direct Ant-Man — he is thinking directing something else for them.
The filmmaker spoke to CraveOnline during the press tour for We The Economy:
“I just did a big rewrite on Ant-Man with Paul Rudd and had such a great time working with them that we’re kicking around ideas. But yeah, maybe I would take on one of the characters so we haven’t locked in anything, but discussions are definitely going on.”
Typical answer you would hear considering this is Marvel we are talking about, but just the thought of McKay directing a Marvel film is already cool.
The director is best known for comedies like Step Brothers, Talladega Nights, and the two Anchorman movies. The Other Guys and Anchorman may be as close to an action film McKay has directed. But we should have complete confidence in Marvel’s decisions if they hire him to direct a film. As we have seen before the studio continuously finds way to surprise us.
Anthony and Joe Russo, who directed You, Me, and Dupree and a couple of episodes of Community, directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and are working on Captain America 3. The two are also rumored to be in line to direct Avengers 3 and Avengers 4.
If McKay does sign on to direct a Marvel film, he will have a few choices to make. There’s Black Panther, Black Widow, and maybe even Avengers 3 and/or 4. I’m not sure if Thor 3 is in his wheelhouse considering the fantastical aspect of the film, but Marvel knows what they are doing.
What do you think about Adam McKay possibly directing a Marvel film?

Sounds like “Ant-Man” is going to be more light-hearted fare along the same lines as GOTG. Not necessarily a bad thing but they gotta be careful when treading that line of genuinely funny versus campy.
