Warner Bros.’ DC Comic Film universe is continuing to develop. One of those films that will venture out of the superhero realm is the Suicide Squad. David Ayers has already signed on to direct the film, due out in theaters in August 2016, but Suicide Squad has no cast yet. However, the line-up may have started to form. Jesse Eisenberg, who will play Lex Luthor in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, may reprise his role in the film; while Jared Leto has been rumored to play the Joker. Now, there is confirmation that Margot Robbie (Wolf Of Wall Street) will play Harley Quinn.
Collider was the first to report on the news, which has yet to be confirmed. While Harley Quinn may be a prominent member of the Suicide Squad in the New 52, the rumored characters in the film include Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and Vixen.
The Suicide Squad is a group of villains given the chance to reduce their prison sentences by going on top secret government missions with a zero chance of coming out of it alive. This makes Vixen all the more interesting addition to the team because in the original comics, she was a hero; in fact, she was fighting alongside the Justice League.
Back to Harley Quinn, the character was first introduced in Batman: The Animated Series in 1992. She first started out as a Henchman, but her popularity started to grow, and she was given a full backstory, and was even the masochistically linked to the Joker. In her origins story, Quinn was actually Harleen Quinzel, a psychiatrist taking care of patients over at Arkham Asylum. One of the patients was the Joker, who plays reverse psychology on her, causing Harleen to fall madly in love with him and join his side. Though the relationship is borderline abusive, Harley sticks by him through thick and thin.
This will actually be the first time we see Harley Quinn on the big screen. Robbie can next be seen starring alongside Will Smith in Focus, and will be in the Tina Fey comedy Taliban Shuffle.
