It’s tradition for many of us to post our top films of the year at this time. Of course the same could be said for filmmakers, actors, writers, and others. And now we are getting our very first look at the year’s best from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright. The director has been known to release his thoughts on the best in film, and this year is no different. What is a bit different is his situation. Wright has been caught up in a bit of controversy with Disney and Marvel parting ways with him over creative differences on Ant-Man. So while we wait to hear what his next project will be, he has released his top ten of the year.

Here is the list in no particular order from Esquire.
BoyhoodThe Grand Budapest HotelBirdmanSnowpiercerInterstellarNightcrawlerUnder the SkinThe LEGO MovieWhiplashEdge of Tomorrow
There is a good mix of indie and tentpole films on this list, and I have yet to see Under the Skin, Edge of Tomorrow, and Nightcrawler. But there are a few that I don’t quite agree with. There are also some other films that have yet to be released to consider, but seeing as those are either remakes or sequels I can see why he might have said the following,
“We need to make more original movies and audiences would do well to support original movies, for the future of the medium. I tire of franchises, remakes, and endless sequels. All of the movies I [mention below] work great as standalone stories. More please.”
This is probably why we aren’t seeing Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, or Guardians of the Galaxy on this list. Or even The Hobbit: The Battle Of Five Armies, Exodus: Gods and Kings, etc…
It should be an interesting list of films in 2015, seeing that that year alone will see sequels, adaptations, remakes, reboots, up the wazoo.
But what is most interesting is the exclusion of Obvious Child and The Skeleton Twins.
Do you agree with this list? What are some of your favorite films of the year?

Great list – Under the Skin blew me away. So did Whiplash and Grand Budapest Hotel.
Haven’t seen Boyhood or Snowpiercer yet (hello Netflix for Snowpiercer) but heard very good things. I think Edge of Tomorrow would have gotten more love if it’d been pushed as an indie (ala District 9 & Monsters; genre but off the beaten track) rather than a blockbuster.
