The Witch

Edgar Wright‘s upcoming horror film has found its lead.

New reports say that Glass star Anya Taylor-Joy will be starring in Wright’s upcoming film, which is said to draw inspiration from films like Don’t Look Now and Roman Polanski’s Repulsion. Additionally, the film is said to be going by the working title Last Nigh in Soho. More on the report below.

Variety was the first to report on the casting and the title. /Film’s reporting reveals that Last Nigh In Soho is actually a working title, so it is subject to change. That being said, Wright’s horror film, which is being co-written with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, will be heading into production soon.

When the film was announced Wright talked a little bit about what to expect to see in his upcoming horror effort and some of the inspiration that will go into it:

“I realised I had never made a film about central London – specifically Soho, somewhere I’ve spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years. With Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead you make movies about places you’ve lived in. This movie is about the London I’ve existed in.”

Unlike some of Wright’s previous efforts, all of which had a comedic slant to them, Last Nigh in Soho will be a straight-up horror film. It also feels very personal as the movie will be about the London he’s “existed in.” One that is in the same vein as Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now and Roman Polanski’s Repulsion. Both films are psychological horror-thrillers that dealt with some form of emotional torment. So it is safe to say that Taylor-Joy’s character will have some deep psychological scars by the end of the film.

Taylor-Joy is among one of the freshest faces in the film industry, having made her major debut in Robert Eggers’ The Witch. She also appeared in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and its sequel, Glass. Other roles include Morgan and Thoroughbreds. She also has roles in Netflix’s The Dark Crystal prequel and Fox’s The New Mutants, an X-Men spinoff with a slight horror twist.

Given that Wright has worked in humor in many of his films, I am very interested to see what he can do with a pure horror film. Last Nigh in Soho is expected to shoot this summer. No release date has been announced. Of course, we will keep you up to date as soon as more developments come in.
