The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Netflix is bringing back some nostalgia in a very big way. During their San Diego Comic-Con 2019 panel, they showed off the newest trailer for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

The new television series promises to honor the Jim Henson‘s film while also utilizing VFX technology. Now the streaming service has released a behind-the-scenes look plus a trailer. Check it out below.

The world and the characters that inhabit it look incredible. And work that goes into bringing all of that to life is impressive, to say the least.

This featurette takes a look at all the intricate details it takes to create everything that we will see in the upcoming series. Not only that, but we also get to see the puppet work that gives these characters emotion and motion. I am just excited to see that there is a return to practical effects and puppetry. It seems like it’s a sort of lost art form.

Director and executive producer Louis Leterrier said of the series:

“The idea is you watch the show and you forget you’re watching puppets. Watching all the behind the scenes work in this featurette, I have to say, there is a good chance that I will forget that I am watching puppets. It’s a pretty effective marketing piece.”

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Based on The Dark Crystal, Jim Henson’s groundbreaking 1982 feature film, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance tells a new epic story, set many years before the events of the movie, and realized using classic puppetry with cutting edge visual effects. The world of Thra is dying. The Crystal of Truth is at the heart of Thra, a source of untold power. But it is damaged, corrupted by the evil Skeksis, and a sickness spreads across the land. When three Gelfling uncover the horrific truth behind the power of the Skeksis, an adventure unfolds as the fires of rebellion are lit and an epic battle for the planet begins.

The show stars Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Donna Kimball as the main characters.

The Gelflings are voiced by Eddie Izzard, Helena Bonham Carter, Caitriona Balfe, Harris Dickinson, Shazad Latif, Toby Jones, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Lena Headey, Alicia Vikander, Hannah John-Kamen, Natalie Dormer, Mark Strong, Theo James, and Louise Gold.

While the Skeksis are voiced by Simon Pegg, Awkwafina, Jason Isaacs, Benedict Wong, Harvey Fierstein, Andy Samberg, Ralph Ineson, Alice Dinnean, Keegan-Michael Key, Mark Hamill, and Neil Sterenberg.
