Monopoly 80th Anniversary US Edition

Looks like some lucky folks in France who purchase a brand new Monopoly set might get a lot more than they bargained for. During celebrating of the legendary board game’s 80th anniversary this year, 80 sets that have been produced in France will have real Euro currency inside, according to The Washington Post. The cool total comes to 20,580 Euros, or about $23,000. Not bad for a $15 dollar investment (the general retail price of the game).

All throughout the year, there will be celebrations at hand for the real estate made easy game, which was originally released by Parker Brothers in 1935 and which quickly became a national phenomenon, and eventually, a global phenomenon, which it currently is. Through the decades since its introduction to the gaming market, there have been countless versions which span almost every language known to man, and also countless versions which have highlighted a particular product or brand, as in The Beatles, Spongebob, Family Guy, Star Wars, The Walking Dead and even focusing custom versions on a particular city like New York or Los Angeles. All told, the phenomenology of Monopoly continues to baffle pundits and delights audiences and new generations with each passing year.

And while the domestic version of the Monopoly gets a collector’s edition commemorating the milestone anniversary via a replica of an old version of the game, it’s surely the offering in France that is going to whet everyone’s appetite. With the inclusion of the real Euros taking place of the game bills, which have the famous “choo choo trains” affixed to their front, there should be a fever pitch for buyers in France, as to who are the lucky ones who get these prized sets.

The 80 special prize editions are reportedly “barely distinguishable from a typical set but for a slight bulge in the packaging,” so keep that in mind, people of France!

A spokeswoman for Hasbro, the Monopoly manufacturer in France, mentioned that it wasn’t easy to get the loot into the games, and that they were inserted into the game in place of the fake money last month in a small forest town in France. Even getting the money was a slight challenge, as they had to be escorted discreetly, said the spokeswoman.

The inspiration for the fun and ultimately profitable publicity stunt was from a survey that was conducted just prior to the anniversary, in which random people were asked what they would most like to find in their Monopoly box. Just about over 50 percent wished to have real money in the bank in the game.

If they are one of the lucky ones and reside in France, those wishes just might be coming true, regardless if they pass Go or not.
