20th Century Fox and Ryan Reynolds are developing a new movie based on the board game Clue. The movie is the first project in a new three-year first-look deal Fox has signed with Reynolds, who stars in Deadpool and its upcoming sequel for the studio, and his production company Maximum Effort.
Currently in talks to write the screenplay is Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who also wrote the script for Deadpool.
Reynolds and Maximum Effort will produce the film with Allspark Pictures, the film division of the owner and maker of the board game, Hasbro. The project is also being developed for Reynolds to star in.
Hasbro’s board game has been turned into a movie in the past, also titled Clue, in 1985. The mystery comedy starred Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Eileen Brennan, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, and Lesley Ann Warren.
A decade ago another movie based on the game was in the works at Universal Pictures with Pirates of the Caribbean and A Cure for Wellness director Gore Verbinski attached, but that ultimately fell apart. It re-surfaced a couple of years back, this time at Fox, in what was described as a “worldwide mystery with action-adventure elements.”
Whether or not Reynolds’ version will be anything like the ’80s version, the global action-adventure Fox was planning two years back, or something else entirely remains to be seen.
