Though Astro Boy‘s 2009 animated adaptation didn’t create a new fanbase, the franchise remains popular. Now the titular character will get another opportunity to have that new fan base with the upcoming live-action adaptation from Animal Logic, the same studio that gave us the 2014 hit The LEGO Movie.
They will be teaming up with Japan’s Tezuka Productions for the project. Hit the jump for more.
The Hollywood Reporter says that no directors are attached, and they are searching for writers to pen the script.
Animal Logic is best known for their groundbreaking work on Happy Feet, and their work can next be seen on Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Astro Boy first debuted in the early 1950s by Osamu Tezuka. Astro Boy is a powerful robot created by the head of the Ministry of Science, Doctor Tenma, whose son, Tobio, died in a car accident. Built in his likeness, Astro Boy was built Tobio’s memory and treated Astro as lovingly as if he was the real Tobio. However, Tenma knew that Astro would be unable to fill that void, and could not accept his robotic son as a replacement. Astro Boy would eventually find a new owner, and go on Pinocchio-style adventures, stopping various crimes and battling evil robots.
Animal Logic’s and producer Zareh Nalbandian said this about the upcoming adaptation.
“We’ve seen him as a manga, an anime and an animated movie but we’ve never seen him as a live-action movie or him as a superhero,” said Nalbandian. “We actually see him in the same league as an Iron Man.”
The 2009 animated film of the same featured the voices of Freddie Highmore and Kristen Bell, but it was critically panned and was a box office flop.
Animal Logic is also working on a Betty Boop project.
