Peter Rabbit is easily one of the most memorable pieces of children literature to ever be released. Since its publication back in 1902, five subsequent books were then released between 1904 and 1912. The rest is, as they say, history. Merchandise and adaptations would soon follow, thus continuing the success of the franchise. Now, the title character is about to get the big-screen treatment from Sony Animation Pictures. A new report says The Late Late Show host James Corden, Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley, and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 star Elizabeth Debecki will star in the live-action animation hybrid of Peter Rabbit. Rose Bryne will also have a role in the film. More on the story below.
Variety broke the news earlier today. The film, which will be directed by Annie helmer Will Gluck, is an adaptation of Beatrix Potter’s beloved character Peter Rabbit, an anthropomorphic rabbit who lives amongst his fellow rabbits living like humans do in an undisclosed countryside meadow. Corden will voice Peter, while Byrne will play Bea, the film’s live-action human. Ridley and Debecki will provide the additional voices to characters that have yet to be named.
Sony will be working with Frederick Warne, who has been Beatrix Potter’s publisher since its publication of The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902 and is the home of Peter Rabbit and the Beatrix Potter brand.
Here’s what Tom Weldon, CEO of Penguin Random House UK, had to say about the announcement:
“We at Penguin Random House UK are delighted to be working with Columbia Pictures. As custodians of Beatrix Potter’s brand and legacy, we are excited about the opportunity this production will bring to engage a whole new audience with the world of Beatrix Potter and one of her best-loved characters, the mischievous Peter Rabbit.”
The new adaptation of the book also means that Sony, along with Warne, will be launching a new wave of merchandising that will hopefully create a new generation of fans.
The animation will be handled by Australia’s Animal Logic animation and visual effects studio, whose credits include The LEGO Movie, the upcoming The LEGO Movie Sequel, and most recently The Great Gatsby. Rob Lieber (Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day) will pen the script.
Production is set to begin January 2017, and is tentatively scheduled for an April 2018 release. The announcement of the film couldn’t have come at a more perfect time, as Peter Rabbit celebrates is 150th anniversary this year.
